Add Good Posture to Your Child's Back-to-School List

Written By Salud Chiropractic on July 16, 2018

The thought of teaching proper posture to children often conjures up images of stern nannies and uncomfortable school uniforms.

This is unfortunate because not only are children developing lifelong habits, but spinal injuries can affect concentration and physical health. In fact, anywhere from 20% to 51% of children suffer from lower back pain -- likely from musculoskeletal misalignment.

As your kids in Rohnert Park go back to school, take a proactive approach to their musculoskeletal health.

What’s Impacting Your Child’s Spine Health?

Most adults know that sitting and slouching at work all day is detrimental to spine health and causes chronic pain. Although kids sit at school for several hours each day, their vulnerability to poor musculoskeletal health is rarely mentioned.

Also, children carry heavy backpacks which put pressure on lumbar discs in all the wrong places leading to back pain.

Handheld devices don’t help either: hunching heads down to look at phones, tablets, and laptops can throw the cervical spine completely out of shape. Remember that “text neck” isn’t only caused by phones: hunching over a desk or book delivers the same negative effect.

Even an active child may not have the correct stance, gait, and form while playing soccer, running, or participating in other activities, putting them at risk for musculoskeletal misalignment and injury.

The Effects of Bad Posture in Children

Development is one of the biggest factors here because children are still growing. Chronic slouching and text neck can negatively impact a child’s spinal growth. Furthermore, children who experience back pain continue to suffer through adolescence and into adulthood.

A poor seated position can also impact organ function. Remember that the musculoskeletal system acts like a frame to hold soft tissues and organs in just the right place. When the spine is misaligned, this can cause problems in the stomach, intestines, and lungs.

Subluxations and misalignment can also impact concentration and mental wellbeing. Studies show that good posture improves memory during learning in infants.

Pediatric Chiropractic Care in Rohnert Park

Gentle adjustments and chiropractic care can help children improve their musculoskeletal system leading to reduced ADHD symptoms and back pain while improving overall wellbeing. In fact, almost 20 percent of all chiropractic patients are children.

Make chiropractic care a part of your child’s back-to-school routine.
